Some dental issues are more talked than others. Things like cavities and dentures often enter into the public discourse involving oral health. However, there are other dental treatments that are just as important to the health of your teeth and gums. Periodontal disease is one of them.

Periodontal disease is caused by a bacterial infection inside your gums. This happens after a large amount of tartar is allowed to develop. Symptoms of this happening are red and inflamed gums. If periodontal disease is left unchecked it can begin to wear away at the bones supporting your teeth, which will eventually lead to the patient losing their teeth.

Periodontal disease is treated by scraping off the plaque and biofilm from the roots of the teeth. This procedure, called scaling and root planing, removes large portions of the bacteria causing the disease in order to help prevent bone and tooth loss.

After a scaling and root planing, the patient should be sure to double down on their daily brushing and flossing in order to prevent a further outbreak. You will never be able to completely get rid of periodontal disease, but these preventative measures will keep the disease from spreading further.
